HVAC Tips for New Homeowners: What You Need to Know

keys to a home
Understanding the major components of your home can be key to your comfort!
Congratulations!

It is so exciting to purchase a home and make it all your own! Even though it may not be as exhilarating as new furniture and color swatches, your HVAC system is high on the list of things you should think about.

Your HVAC system is responsible for regulating the temperature, humidity, and air quality within your home. Whether it's keeping you warm in the winter or cool during the scorching summer months, your HVAC system is integral to your comfort. Here are some HVAC tips for new homeowners - what you need to know.

What type of system do you have? See What's Your Type? to determine the type of system you have and where the major components are located. A little basic HVAC knowledge can bring an abundance of confidence and security when making choices about one of the most essential and valuable elements of your home.

How old is your equipment? Older equipment may not be as efficient as newer models and could be prone to breakdowns and higher energy consumption. Make a note of the age of your heating and cooling system(s), so you’ll have a ballpark timeframe of when they’ll need replaced. If your equipment is more than 10-15 years old, you may want to prepare for replacement to ensure maximum comfort and energy efficiency.

What is the condition of the ductwork? The ductwork in your home plays a crucial role in distributing heated or cooled air to different rooms. Inspect the ductwork throughout the home for gaps, loose connections, or signs of condensation. Leaky ducts can lead to energy waste, reduced efficiency, and uneven temperature distribution in your home. Properly sealed and insulated ducts are essential for efficient HVAC performance.

Locate your air filters and determine the type and size. Be prepared to replace them every 30 days or so for clean air and efficiency.

Schedule routine maintenance. The manufacturer recommends you have maintenance performed at least once a year. Regular maintenance ensures that your HVAC equipment runs at it's maximum efficiency. It also helps identify and address minor issues before they escalate into costly repairs. Consistent TLC can extend the lifespan of an HVAC system, but neglect can lead to premature failure.
