We love our heating and air conditioning systems! They make us happy. That is, until they don’t work. And then we’re unhappy…and hot. Lots of things can go wrong with your AC system in the summer. Here are 4 of the most common problems:
#1: Frozen Coil
It seems counterintuitive to talk about a frozen coil during the heat of summer, but that’s one of the most common AC problems. One way that a coil may become frozen is if the evaporator coils or a dirty air filter are blocking the flow of air to and from the air conditioning unit and preventing enough heat exchange to keep away the frost.
#2: Thermostat Malfunction
If your house seems warmer than it should, there could be more than one reason, but the thermostat is a good place to start. Test for proper functioning by turning it 5 degrees cooler than the room temperature. Does the system turn on? If yes, does the air still feel warm? Either of these could indicate a problem with your thermostat.
#3: Blowing Warm Air
This is a real problem, when you expect a nice cool house but instead find that your blower is returning nothing but warm air. One thing to check is the air filter. A dirty air filter could be preventing the cool air from circulating through your home. If the filter appears clean, it's probably time to have an expert take a look at your system.
#4: Natural Interferences
While it may not seem like a big deal if weeds begin to grow around your air conditioner, they may end up causing contactor failure which could lead to your entire system not functioning. Keep your system clean and regularly clear away any plants, ants, or other bugs that may be making their home around your air conditioner. Doing so will allow sufficient airflow and keep your air conditioner running free from interference.
When you’re talking about mechanical equipment such as an air conditioner with lots of moving parts there are many things that can go wrong. With the right maintenance, however, you can catch some of these issues before they turn into expensive problems.
