10 Tips For Reducing Your Home's Cooling Bills

Arianne Large - Thursday, July 28, 2016

Summer has finally arrived, and chances are you have already used your air conditioner a few times, if it is not running around the clock. You may also be a bit concerned with the cost of cooling your home this summer. Cooling bills can be very expensive especially when the temperatures and humidity are high, like they have been the past few years.

Let’s look at a few things you can do to prevent using your air conditioning unit when possible:

  • Decide on a comfortable temperate such as 73 degrees and set the thermostat and leave it there

  • In the morning and evening when the sun has gone down and it is cooler open your windows and the let the breeze cool your home

  • If you have ceiling fans use them with both the air conditioner and without it, the ceiling fans will allow the cooler to circulate better throughout the room(s)

  • Use box fans to pull the hot air in the house out by setting it in a window with the cooling side facing the outdoors. You can also use a fan to circulate cool air, like a ceiling fan.

  • Use curtains that help block out the sun, these will help keep the sun out and the cool air inside

  • Utilize your BBQ grill or crockpot to cook with and avoid the oven and even the stove as much as possible, when it is extremely hot outside

Luckily, there are a number of things you can do to prepare your air conditioning unit to operate at its best and efficiently or enlist the services of Helms Heating & Air Conditioning Inc. to do it for you.

  • Clean or replace your air conditioner filter, once a month for a more efficient running unit

  • Clean the air conditioning unit, if you have bent or broken fins, air flow may be blocked if you cannot fix them, maybe it is time to consider replacing the air conditioner

  • If your air conditioner sits in a window, make sure the seal around the unit is tight so hot air from outside cannot slip in and cool air cannot slip out

  • If you cool your home with central air you should have the system checked and any maintenance done before you use it
